Feeling broken is not the same as being a failure.

When I recently looked at our pond to see how our papyrus plant was doing, I noticed something remarkable. Broken stems had ended up with their tops in the water, and that turned out to be exactly what was supposed to happen. New stems grow from that part.

So if you feel broken and completely defeated, that is an important moment when you will start to grow.

'But it doesn't feel like that at all!', I hear you say. Of course, I have no idea what the papyrus plant feels when one of its stems breaks, but when a human being breaks a bone or receives bad news, it hurts. And who is going to celebrate their pain? Admittedly, there is something contradictory about it, but that doesn't make it any less true. Very often we see adversity as something negative. You lose your job, you constantly argue with your partner, your children don't listen to you, you realise you haven't properly dealt with problems from your past. You feel like a failure and psychologically broken.

Feeling broken is not the same as being a failure.

Think of the broken papyrus stalk with its head in the water. Let your head hang down for a moment. Because what you see as failure is an opportunity to grow. That stalk doesn't need to be cut off. It's a part of you that needs attention right now. With an appointment for Gestalt Therapy, Couples Therapy or Brainspotting, I will help you figure out what you need to deal with your pain and achieve that growth.
